The institute’s spring intern started her work in Beirut

FIME’s intern for spring 2024 Jasmin Paananen started her work in Beirut in the middle of January.

Jasmin is an MA student in Middle Eastern studies at the University of Helsinki. In her studies she has focused especially on the areas of Lebanon, Palestine and Israel, learning about their societies, cultures and politics. Alongside Middle Eastern studies Jasmin has studied global politics and communication. In the master’s thesis that she is currently working on she focuses on the situation of Palestinian in Lebanon.

– I’m extremely happy about this opportunity to work as FIME’s intern in Beirut for the spring. My plan is to not only learn more about the work that the institute does but also about Lebanon. Additionally, I will work on my master’s thesis and continue the Arabic language studies that I have already started in Helsinki.

Jasmin has previously worked as a communications specialist at The Peace Education Institute in Finland and as a training coordinator at the Committee of 100 in Finland.

– I’m looking forward to using my communication and event planning skills in the context of Middle Eastern studies and leaning more by doing so. These five months at the institute will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience.
