New Intern of the institute begins their work in Beirut

FIME’s intern for Spring 2023 Nuura Naboulsi began their work in Beirut in February.

Nuura recently gained a master’s degree in Social Sciences from University of Helsinki. Before the master’s programme in Global Politics and Communication they studied Development Studies in Lund University. The focus of their studies was global political economy with courses about the development of SWANA region. Nuura has worked as a research assistant in University of Helsinki and as an intern in the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland among other places.

– I am excited about the opportunity to work at a research institute with goals and projects close to my heart. After attending the intensive course Middle East in Global Political Economy: The Case of Lebanon at FIME in Beirut last Spring, I started planning my application to the institute as well as spending a longer period in my second home country.

Beyond social scientific research and other work Nuura is also a trained diversity officer and has worked as both an organizer and artist in different events and groups in the field of arts and culture. One of these is Yalla collective, a group specialized in SWANA tunes and haflas.

– From poetry nights to the oud master next door, various actors in Beirut continue to enrich the arts and culture scene against all odds. In addition to the internship, the idea is to witness and appreciate these actors locally while working on a fiction manuscript on the side.
