Sandra Nasser El-Dine, (M.Soc.Sc.), former researcher at the Finnish Institute in the Middle East and researcher in the MIGDIA-project supported by the Institute, will defend her thesis at the University of Tampere on 25 April 2025. The defence can be followed on-site at the University of Tampere or online.
Nasser El-Dine’s doctoral dissertation in the field of social anthropology is titled When Loving is Giving: Caring practices as ‘doing’ love in Jordanian and Syrian young adults’ intimate relationships in Amman. Her opponent is Docent Samuli Schielke from the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient. Nasser El-Dine’s doctoral dissertation deals with the experience of love among young Jordanian and Syrian adults. She found that love in relationships is experienced particularly through everyday sharing and various forms of care. The study also examines the relationship of love to power relations and their negotiation in relationships and helps to understand the continued popularity of so-called “traditional marriage” in Jordan and the wider MENA region.
