The Institute is mainly funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, foundations supporting research and culture, associations, and private philanthropists. In 2005, the Alfred Kordelin Foundation financed the acquisition of the Zeituna House, located in the Old City of Damascus. The renovation, carried out during 2007 and 2008, was financed with the help of Finnish Cultural Foundation, Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, University of Helsinki, Åbo Akademi University and William Thuring Foundation.
