Job Announcement: 2 vacancies at FIME for either doctoral or postdoctoral researchers. Fixed term: 1.1.2023–31.12.2024 (but possible to start the term already in autumn 2022).

Location: The Finnish Institute in the Middle East (FIME) in Beirut.

The Finnish Institute in the Middle East (FIME) is an academic institute that focuses on the study of Middle Eastern cultures, religions, societies, as well as classical and modern languages. The institute’s sphere of operations covers the entire Middle East region. In cooperation with various universities, the institute supports Finnish research on the Middle East and offers teaching centered on various relevant topics. It also participates in public discourse carried out in Finland on Middle Eastern issues by providing research-based commentary. Working in FIME offers an excellent vantage point for research on the Middle East in Finland.

The positions are suitable for either postdoctoral researchers or advanced doctoral researchers.

The tasks are varied and demanding, and as such, to succeed in this role, the candidates must have previous experience, that includes but is not limited to:

Working, interning, or conducting research in the Middle East as well as experience from multicultural contexts.
Organizing international events.
External communications such as blogs, podcasts, and social media.
Excellent English and good Finnish skills are a must. Arabic skills are also appreciated.

Success in the role demands initiative, unprejudiced attitude, flexibility, and patience.

Work tasks, salary, housing benefits, duration of the term:

50% of working time will be spent on one’s own doctoral or postdoctoral research. The other 50 % will include administrative duties, teaching, external communications, organizing courses and events as well as other tasks assigned by the director of the institute.
Postdoctoral researchers are expected to conduct independent research.
Salary of postdoc researcher is 2990 euros per month (gross).
Salary of advanced doctoral researcher is 2730 euros per month (gross).
In addition, the costs of living in Beirut are compensated up to 400 euros per month (taxable housing benefit).
The position is fixed term 1.1.2023–31.12.2024. (It is possible to start already in October-November 2022.)
